Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is the second largest Spanish Canary Island that lies off the coast of Africa. The majority of the island was created over 5 million years ago, from a volcanic eruption, but much has been eroded over the centuries by wind and weather. Primarily a fishing village, Fuerteventura’s economy is now based on tourism. And what a fantastic job they have done. Fuerteventura is a peaceful haven with beautiful sandy beaches. If you wish for a relaxing holiday then Fuerteventura is the place to stay.
Fuerteventura is part of the Las Palmas Province, and has six municipalities:
- Antigua
- Betancuria
- La Oliva
- Pajara
- Puerto del Rosario
- Tuineje
The nearby islet, Islote de Lobos belongs to the La Oliva municipal.
Fuerteventura boasts 152 beaches; over 30 miles of silky white sand borders translucent aqua blue seas. Waves roll in softly, fish swim quietly and worshippers soak up the sun – pure heaven! There are also 15 miles of black volcanic shingle beaches.
Visitors arrive at Fuerteventura airport (FUE) from all over the world; the airport is situated near the capital of the island, Puerto del Rosario. Flights from all the major UK airports take approximately 4 hours, and the time zone is as GMT.
The main tourist area in the North is Corralejo, approximately 22 miles from the airport; transfer time is about 45 minutes. Corralejo is the biggest resort on Fuerteventura and it offers holidaymakers sun, sea and sand. This is a popular area for families, children can spend hours playing safely on the clean soft beaches or paddle in the crystal clear warm waters, while parents can lounge away the day, soaking up the glorious sunshine. Sun-loungers can be hired locally for a minimal charge. The town square is the hub of the activity; here you can find shops and restaurants.
Costa Caleta is on the east coast of Fuerteventura, just over 4 miles from the airport; transfer time is approximately 15 minutes. Also known as the Caleta de Fuste, this part of Fuerteventura has concentrated on pure family fun. This is a purpose built holiday resort, and everything you could wish for has been granted. There are numerous hotels, bars, cafes and shops on or close to the beautiful crescent shaped beach. Caleta has a couple of lively bars, although many visitors prefer to while away the evening watching the sunset on the horizon.
Jandia is located south of Costa Calma, just over 16 miles from the airport; with a transfer time taking approximately 1hr 45 mins. Perched on the southeast corner of Fuerteventura, Jandia has an awe-inspiring beach that rolls to the north. It’s a modern resort, with whitewashed buildings and a clean, restaurant-packed centre. Visitors should try one of the tapas bars whilst they are there. Jandia offers sand, sea and sun, and that is what the holidaymaker gets. Make sure your pack your bucket and spade, as there is not much else to do in Jandia! There are a few vibrant music bars in town, for those who want late-night socialising.
Inland, Fuerteventura has large plains, lavascapes as opposed to landscapes, and volcanic mountains. The highest point is Mount Jandia, standing at 2,647ft in the south-western part of the island.
